Saptarshi RoyChowdhury wins 1st New Delhi Rapid Rating Open 2024

Seven players - GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury, IM Aaryan Varshney, IM Ravi Teja S, IM Sambit Panda, IM Aaditya Dhingra, Jake Shanty and Gaha Narayan scored 8/9 each at 1st New Delhi Rapid Rating Open 2024. Top seed of the tournament, Saptarshi became the champion. The remaining six were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. Apart from Aaditya and Gaha, the remaining five were undefeated. The total prize fund was ₹800000. The top three prizes were ₹71000, ₹51000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. The two-day nine-round Swiss league rapid rating tournament was organized by Sara Foundation at Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi on 30th November and 1st December. IM Ravi Teja S was the sole leader 7.5/8, heading into the final round. 14 players were trailing him by a half point at 7/8 each. Ravi drew with FM Ojasva Singh, the former finished third. Top seed of the event, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury defeated FM Joydeep Dutta to become the champion. Kathan Khurana lost to IM Aaryan Varshney and Aaryan secured second place. The top five finishers were only GM and IMs. 13-year-old Jake Shanty is the highest untitled and also the youngest top ten finisher of the tournament. He scored an impressive 8/9 to be placed sixth.

GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury scored an unbeaten 8/9, won the tournament on tie-breaks and gained 2.7 Elo rating points

A total of 688 players including a GM and seven IMs took part from various parts of India and one from USA. The tournament was organized by Sara Foundation at Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi on 30th November and 1st December. The nine-round Swiss league Rating tournament had a time control of 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment from move no.1.
