MGD1 convincingly clinches World Rapid Team 2025 Championship, Hexamind second and Freedom third

by Shahid Ahmed - 14/06/2025

Team MGD1 defeated Malcolm's Mates 3.5-2.5 to win FIDE World Rapid Team Championship 2025. They scored 21/24 and finished a full point ahead of the rest. Hexamind Chess Team scored 20/24 to secure second place. Freedom, Uzbekistan and WR Chess scored 17/24 each. Out of them, Freedom was placed third due to better tie-break scores. Hexamind is the only team who managed to beat the eventual champion, MGD1 in Round 8. Freedom drew with MGD1 in Round 5. It is not about remaining unbeaten, it is all about how you take losses and bounce back. MGD1 truly exemplified it. GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Pentala Harikrishna, GM David Anton Guijarro, GM Leon Luke Mendonca, GM Pranav Venkatesh, IM Stavroula Tsolakidou and Atharvaa P Tayade won Team Gold. At least two Indians in each of the podium finishers

MGD1 became the first Indian team to win World Rapid Team Championship and etch their name in history. GM Pentala Harikrishna has been part of many teams which have won various leagues all over the world. He was also part of the historic Gold medal winning Indian team at the 45th Chess Olympiad. If one goes by statistics only, then they will find him to be the ultimate team player. He added another Gold to his illustrious career. Team events are not about putting an all-star team. Bonding and cohesion are the keys to a team's success. Captain of Team MGD1, GM Srinath Narayanan made a great find in the form of Atharvaa P Tayade who won eleven games in-a-row. He tied the record of Pang Bo's performance in 2024. Atharva might have lost his Round 12 game, due to tiredness or fatigue but nevertheless, his contribution certainly made a deep impact towards the Gold medal performance.

Round 10: Nihal misses against Arjun as Ashdod loses to MGD1

Ashdod Elit Chess Club lost to MGD1 by a minimum margin 2.5-3.5. However, the most exciting and quite possibly most important game of the round and the day was between GM Nihal Sarin (2676) and GM Arjun Erigaisi (2708).

Nihal - Arjun

Position after 37...Be3+??

37...Be3+?? is a big mistake as it forces the bishop trade 38.Kh3 Bxh6 39.Rxh6? instead of recapturing the bishop immediately, computer recommends to first give an intermediate check 39.g4+ to gain valuable tempo Kf4 40.Rf6+ Ke5 now White should take it 41.Rxh6. The game continued 39...e3 40.g4+ Kf4 41.Rf6+ Ke5 42.Rf5+ Ke4 43.Kg3 Ra1 44.Rf4+ Kd3 45.Rf3 Rg1+?? another mistake by Black.

Position after 45...Rg1+??

Black is already low on time. 45...Rg1+?? does not help his case. If anything, it helps White 46.Kf4+- Re1 47.h5 Kd2 48.Rxe3! White had to sacrifice now Rxe3 now 49.g5 is winning but h6?? is not. Nihal was low on time, so he could not precisely calculate and differentiate. 49...Rh3 and the game ended in a draw in the next few moves.

Round 11: MGD1 crushes Theme International Trading

Team MGD1 defeated Theme International Trading by 4.5-1.5. GM Arjun Erigaisi, GM Pranav Venkatesh, IM Stavroula Tsolakidou and Atharvaa P Tayade scored a win each. Pranav was completely lost for the better part of the endgame. However, in the final moments his opponent, GM Tuan Minh Le made a terrible one-move blunder which completely swinged things in Pranav's favor. Even if Tuan won that game, the match result would not have changed.
