5th Cairns Cup R4: Humpy and Harika score to join the lead with Alice

by Shahid Ahmed - 14/06/2025

Two of the best Indian women - GM Koneru Humpy and GM Harika Dronavalli won their respective games in Round 4 of 5th Cairns Cup 2025. Humpy got the better of GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) who played weak according to the former. Humpy exchanged her two minor pieces for a rook and two pawns in the endgame to gain decisive advantage. Harika dominated with her rook and bishop pair against GM Nana Dzagnidze's (GEO) rook, bishop and knight in the endgame. GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) scored her first win of the tournament versus IM Carissa Yip (USA). The sole leader, IM Alice Lee (USA) held the 16th Women's World Champion, GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) to a well contested draw. Round 5 starts today at 12 p.m. local time, 10:30 p.m. IST. Humpy - Assaubayeva: 1-0

GM Koneru Humpy (2543) played three Classical rated games against GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ, 2509). They had all three possible results. The last game was played in February this year, Humpy won that game. This time also, the reigning World Rapid Women Champion, repeated the same.

Dzagnidze - Harika: 0-1

GM Harika Dronavalli (2483) defeated GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO, 2505) earlier this year in Nicosia Grand Prix. In fact, Harika hasn't lost to the Georgian GM since February 2016 in a Classical rated game. That statistic remained unchanged. In a difficult rook and two minor piece endgame ,Harika's bishop pairs were much superior compared to her opponent's bishop and knight when the the latter was pinned, rendering it motionless.
